Lead of Infrastructure
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Infrastructure Team Lead to oversee our hybrid infrastructure environment supporting mission-critical card payment processing services. This role is responsible for ensuring high system availability, driving infrastructure modernisation initiatives, structuring the team's workflow, and maintaining compliance with industry and regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical understanding with proven hands-on skills of complex infrastructures with excellent leadership, planning, and organisational skills. You will manage an 8-person infrastructure team, balancing operational stability and incident response with strategic roadmap execution and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Team Leadership & Work Organisation
- Lead and mentor an 8-member infrastructure team (applications, networks, DBs, virtualization).
- Structure and organise daily work: assign tasks, prioritise workloads, keep the team focused, reduce unnecessary context switching, ensure delivery in the timely manner.
- Ensure that incident response, maintenance activities, and roadmap items are balanced effectively.
- Promote a culture of accountability, ownership, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and skills development planning.
- Maintain clear KPI requirements, advise on objective motivation and bonus measures.
2. Operational Excellence & System Reliability
Ensure high availability and resilience of critical PSP systems running across:
- On-prem data center
- DR site (colocation)
- Cloud environments
Oversee health and performance of infrastructure components:
- Network equipment (Juniper firewalls, Cisco switches/routers)
- Virtualization (Proxmox, VMs)
- Databases (MS SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
- Application hosting and supporting systems
- Monitoring and security tools (Nessus, ESET, Wazuh, Nagios, LibreNMS, etc.)
- Own and improve incident management, escalation procedures, RCA, and preventive measures.
- Coordinate daily monitoring, maintenance, and patching cycles.
3. Infrastructure Modernisation & Architecture Evolution
Own and maintain the infrastructure modernisation roadmap, including:
- New infrastructure and network architecture
- Improving high availability and DR strategy
- Implementation and scaling of GitLab CI/CD
- Increasing automation, Infrastructure-as-Code, and standardisation.
- Translate strategic goals into epics, tasks, and a clear backlog.
- Lead backlog grooming, sprint planning, and coordination with product teams.
- Ensure that the team maintains focus on roadmap items despite operational interruptions.
- Vendor management.
4. Compliance, Security & Standards
- In cooperation with InfoSec and Infrastructure Architect ensure infrastructure and operations remain compliant with: PCI DSS, DORA, NIS2, GDPR, ISO/IEC 27001.
- Collaborate with InfoSec and Compliance teams on audits, documentation, logging, and process improvements.
- Enforce security best practices across configuration management, access control, patching, and monitoring.
5. Collaboration & Communication
- Act as the primary point of contact between the infrastructure team and internal stakeholders.
- Communicate progress, risks, and priorities clearly to management.
- Communicate clear requirements for development teams regarding scaling, authentication, logging, application metrics, and health/performance monitoring.
- In agreement with lead architects maintain and enforce internal standards for use of specific technologies (databases, storage systems, containerization, pipelines, etc).
- Coordinate with development teams to ensure smooth release cycles and support new features.
- Plan and communicate maintenance windows, infrastructure changes, and DR tests.
Requirements
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of hybrid infrastructure environments (on-prem + DR + cloud).
- Deep knowledge of: Network design (Juniper, Cisco, OPNsense), Virtualization (Proxmox, VMware), Databases (MS SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB), and Linux/Windows environments.
- CI/CD tools (GitLab CI/CD strongly preferred).
- Automation tools: Ansible (Required), Terraform or equivalents.
- Knowledge of HA/DR design principles and performance monitoring.
Leadership & Regulatory
- Proven experience leading an infrastructure or operations team.
- Excellent task prioritisation — structured, methodical, and calm under pressure.
- Experience working in (and improving) Agile processes.
- Practical understanding of PCI DSS, DORA, NIS2, and GDPR requirements.
- Experience in regulated industries (fintech, banking, telecom) preferred.
